Strategic Goals of Scouts Canada

It may seem strange for a volunteer youth movement like Scouting to need to have formal strategic goals… sounds like something for a big company somewhere! However, goals are important.  Whether in our personal lives, careers or education goals keep us focused and on track toward what we want to achieve.

In Scouting, we have seven areas that we need to focus on.  For the complete list, I invite you to check out the Scouts Canada website, at www.scouts.ca.  Over the next few months, I will try to challenge you with each of these goals, as I challenge myself and the Council team.

The first is “Relevance”.  In Scouting, that means that our programs must be meaningful to youth, adults and society in general, even in the 21st century.  It doesn’t mean we abandon knot tying and quincies for computers and bus schedules!  But it does mean we evolve and include new things in our programs to stay valuable to Canada today.

It also does not mean we throw everyone over the age of 25 out of Scouting, just because they are no longer “youths”.  Instead it means we provide more and more opportunities for our youth to access the experience and wisdom of our older brothers and sisters to allow them to grow.  As I have said before, one of our strengths is our history and our insistence that there is a place for everyone in this movement.

As we celebrate Scout/Guide week in this, our Centenary year, I challenge you to be mindful of the relevance of your program, of the time you are spending with our youth and other adults, and the way that your actions will help enhance Scouting in its 2nd century.

Yours in Scouting,

Doug Hall, Council Commissioner, commissioner@voyageur.scouts.ca

WHATS NEW

MEMBERSHIP MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

I would like to thank those who sent in the group award request early so that I was able to print and send any certificates for Scout/Guide week banquets and presentations. From what I am hearing many groups had exciting banquets and presentations to recognize leaders in each group.

As you know February is the beginning of Friendfest (continues through to April 30). When sending in registrations please make sure to attach the necessary forms for the Friendfest program and prizes. More information and forms can be printed from the Voyageur Web Site: http://www.voyageur.scouts.ca/index1.htm.

I would like to suggest that groups print out a ‘Police Records Check Status’ report from MMS to locate the names of those adult volunteers who will have their PRC expire before they can register for the next Scouting year. Once in your group file in MMS simply click on ‘reports’ and then ‘Police Record Check Status’ and the system will create a list of all registered adult members in your group and when the last PRC was completed along with the length of time before it expires. Don’t get caught in the line waiting for PRC’s during Early Registration.

Hope you all had an enjoyable Scout/Guide week and we wish to thank each of you for your hard work and dedication to the youth.

Yours in Scouting,

Lynn Levitan, Council Registrar, llevitan@scouts.ca, ext 502

Thank you to all the Scouters who are stepping forward to provide training, who attend courses, and who are putting the “spirit of scouting” into attitude.  Your efforts will be rewarded through the youth in your care and your fellow scouters.

A second, For Those Who Help Others WB I course for Group Commissioners, Area Teams and Trainers is scheduled for April 20, 21, 22.  The FTWHO WB II was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances and decisions on dates and place are being made now.  Both of these courses will be posted on the web shortly.

OUR CAMPS – OUR YOUTH – OUR PROGRAMS

This month’s highlight is the Otter Lake camps.  We actually have two of them.  One is in the southwest corner of our geographical region and the other is in la belle province of Quebec.

Otter Lake, Ontario is located north of Kingston at the entrance to Frontenac Provincial Park.  It has Troop sized sites, a dining hall, two kitchens, large fields for games, a chapel area and access to lakes for launching canoe trips and to the Rideau Trail.

Otter lake Quebec is located on Hughes Lake just north of the town of Otter Lake.  It has a building with wood stove for heat, propane stove for cooking, bunks for 21, a large campfire circle and access to lakes for canoeing.  Check out the camp details off the Voyageur website.  You are sure to find a facility suitable for your campers’ skill level and adventure interests.
