FROM THE DESK OF THE COUNCIL COMMISSIONER
Development… The “Never-Ending”
Path
Our development as leaders is based
on our experiences and the experiences of others. By engaging with our fellow leaders, we
can learn many new ways to do things.
In isolation, we have the much bigger task of coming up with creative
ways to deliver the program ourselves!
Even our formal courses are designed around idea/experience sharing, and
are meant to guide participants toward common goals for
Scouting.
As your Commissioner, I am
responsible for the delivery of quality program within Voyageur Council. Obviously I cannot ensure that every
leader in every section is delivering a top-notch program, but I can ensure that
leaders have all the tools they need to make it happen. Our training requirements for leaders is
a key component of the toolkit, and will give all our Scouters a basis for
building and delivering an excellent program.
If you are a new leader, WELCOME!!!
Do you want to do a great job for your youth? Of course you do, so get yourself signed
up for a Wood Badge 1 Course right
away! If you are a seasoned leader,
WE NEED YOU! Your experiences to
share make our training opportunities all the richer, and I guarantee, you too
will learn lots which will help you to
deliver your program.
If we are to ensure the safety of
our members, the quality of our program, and continue the legacy of our Movement
into it’s second hundred years, ongoing development is a critical tool in our
kitbag.
Have you “developed” yourself
recently?
Yours in Scouting,
______
RECOGNITION
(HONOURS AND AWARDS)
"The
best thing to do behind a person's back is to pat it " - Franklin P.
Jones
The Council Honours and Awards Committee extends
congratulations to the following individuals for receiving awards:
Anthony Craig, 123rd Ottawa, Award for
Fortitude.
Once
again our Scouting year is off to a good start and picking up pace. A reminder that October
31st is the deadline for submissions for “Order of the Caribou Award”. Any late submissions will be added
to the list and presented at the general meeting in 2007. November is spent getting the
certificates prepared and medals ordered, therefore we need this lead time prior
to the Annual General Meeting, December 2nd.
At the
same time, the Committee will also review all other submissions that are sent
in. Let us assist you in your submissions.
WHATS
NEW
A Beaver has been found in a field
in Ottawa and was turned in by one of our parents as she thought it
could have been ours (No, I am not
talking about a live one or a young
child who should be in school). This one is 750 mm tall, brown (as it should be), has a beaver
hat and responds to the name "Bucky". He has a logbook with him that tells of last
year's adventures and who looked after
him. Unfortunately someone forgot him on his last adventure. He has
spent the summer getting a tan in our Beaver Contact Leader's bedroom window. But now "Bucky" wants to go home. The 104th Ottawa
Beaver Colony have been looking after "Bucky" but one Beaver is
enough.
Thanks.
Dave McOnie,
104th Ottawa

FUNDRAISING
"Scout Popcorn"
The 2006 Campaign
is off to a fantastic start. Thanks to all the groups who sent representatives
to the Coordinators meeting on September
26th. It was a great night - your energy & enthusiasm is infectious! Our Family Fun Night at
the Museum of Science and Technology was also an overwhelming success. Over 550
people came out to explore the museum and help us kick off the 100th Anniversary of Scouting. (If you haven’t visited
the museum in the past few years, it’s a worth another look. There’s something
for everyone!
By now, you
should have the materials that you need for your campaign, including order forms, prize brochures and
buttons. If you haven't picked them up yet,
please contact Tim Foreman at tforeman@scouts.ca .
Don’t forget that product is now available for the Show and Sell
Campaign. For more information,
please visit the Fundraising
pages on the Voyageur Council Web Site at
www.voyageur.scouts.ca.
Good
luck!

Leaders Conference
In June 2006, the Voyageur Council
Management Committee approved a Leaders Conference similar to STINK, which
was held a number of years ago in Brockville. I volunteered to be the Chair for
the Leaders Conference. I would like
your feedback on what you would like to see, ie workshops, training, and
presentations. I am also looking for
individuals with a special interest in being on the Committee. What do we
need on this Committee? Think of it as a camp. We need a facility, refreshments, program, accommodation,
registration, advertisement, and
financials. So, if you have
ideas, or would like to be involved please
contact me.
