FROM THE DESK OF THE COUNCIL COMMISSIONER

“So, are you going to one of the Jamborees next summer?”

Jamborees have been a unique and important part of the Scouting program for about as long as there has been a movement.  They give us an opportunity to interact with members from other parts of the country and the world; all our brothers and sisters in the world-wide Scouting family.

I have had the privilege of attending a number of Canadian Jamborees in my life so far, and even one very exciting World Jamboree in Norway in 1975 (the theme of that one was “5 fingers, one hand”, referring to the 5 Scandinavian countries.  Imagine the thrill of being part of a group of 15,000+ youth all standing together in the shape of a hand…).  I can tell you honestly, that whether attending as a youth or an adult, I vividly remember each of these amazing events with fond memories.

Next year’s Canadian Jamboree is taking place only a couple of hours away in Quebec.  The camp, Tamaracouta, is the oldest continuous Scout camp in the world!!  With the anniversary of Scouting being the focus of the whole year, it promises to be a great Jamboree.

To help you get ready, the Council has a CJ Committee in place.  They will provide you whatever information you need, and help you with preparations.  Also, they will run a pre-camp in the spring to ensure you and your youth are prepared for typical jamboree conditions.  Check the Council web site for information, meetings, pre-camp details, and contacts.

As section leaders, you have the great opportunity to participate in the 2007 events with your youth.  It takes a bit of work, and a bunch of planning, but I promise you that the experience will be worth every minute of preparation.  And you’ll know that when your youth are talking to their grandchildren many years from now, they will pass on these great times that you made happen for them.

If you are not already registered, it is not too late!  Registration information is available on the web.  But the deadline to guarantee a spot is coming up fast, so don’t delay.

I look forward to sharing this wonderful experience with you and your youth next summer!  See you there!

Yours in Scouting,

Doug Hall, Council Commissioner, commissioner@voyageur.scouts.ca

MEMBERSHIP MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

The second batch of 2006-2007 membership cards has been counted and sorted and will be forwarded to all Area Commissioners shortly. Once again I have copied the section summary page and included it in the package to indicate who the cards are for. Please promptly forward the membership cards to the members listed on the summary form. Once again I request that you take special care in ensuring that all adult members on the section listing have in fact completed all criteria necessary for confirming registration and are listed as ‘active’ in MMS.
Recently I have noticed some groups making minor changes to their group name in MMS. This typically is not a problem but it seems some groups are altering the names so that it is making it difficult for anyone with Council or Nation wide access to MMS to find certain groups. When making changes to your group name please remember that name and section constancy is vital to access by others. Please keep in mind that a group name such as 1st Ottawa is not 1st St Mark’s and that each section should reflect the Colony, Pack, Troop etc not Beavers, Cubs, Scouts. By all groups keeping to this same format it makes things much easier for those of us that have viewing ability to the entire National membership in MMS. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.
