FROM THE DESK OF THE COUNCIL
COMMISSIONER
Happy New Year! Sometimes it is hard to believe how quickly the time
flies. We are now into the winter program season. Scouting is even more fun now. We are still camping and hiking, but with the
added bonus of no insects. Sliding down hills, skating on frozen water, cross
country skiing. The stars look brighter at night. We need to use our outdoors at this time of
year too. It is a great excuse to sit and have hot chocolate while warming up by a fire. Where am I going
with this? Just a reminder that winter provides a playground and program opportunities
for the youth. Ask what their favourite winter activity is, and incorporate it
into the program. We can have fun outdoors
all year round. The outdoors
provides great learning activities
as well. Look for bird and animal tracks in
the snow while hiking. Remember "Learn by Doing" and dress in
layers to keep warm!
______
HONOURS AND AWARDS
"The best
thing to do behind a person's back is to pat it " - Franklin P.
Jones
What
does one do to nominate someone for an award?
Get a
printout of your candidate's Scouting
history – this
needs to be attached to your application.
Your group registrar or local Council can help. This will include key positions, years of
service, training completed/given, any previous awards, etc. and if possible
dates/year.
Collect
details of candidate’s special actions – talk
to others who know the individual.
These can include section leadership team members; group or youth
members; Scouter’s Club; training course colleagues/trainers; family members;
friends and any other sources or information you can
collect.
Complete
the paperwork and submit – don’t
be intimidated by the application form.
Just be sure to include the special things the candidate did; where and
when; was anyone else involved; what makes it a special service and how did it
affect Scouting’s mission.
Concentrate
on one activity at a time; ask for help on your nomination; state why he/she
deserves recognition and submit to the Honours & Awards Committee and let
them decide on the award. If more
information is needed, they will contact you.
Be sure
to keep copies of your notes/submissions.
Next
month, we will give you more thoughts on the nominating
process.

MEMBERSHIP
MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
As the majority of registrations
have been entered into MMS the National technical support department of MMS will
be rolling over the system in the near future. This phase will make ‘inactive’
all members with a current status of ‘active-not renewed’. Only members that are
‘active-not renewed’ will be changed.
I urge
all groups to make sure all their members have been entered and registration
confirmed as soon as possible to avoid the extra work of having to ‘reactivate’
any members made inactive by this up and coming roll-over of MMS. Along with the
member status change, the login name for
each member that is made ‘inactive’ will be removed. This will disable their
ability to login to MMS. Once this change is made to MMS, groups will be able to input the Next Session
date including fee, maximum youth and
maximum
volunteers.
I would
like to remind groups planning an awards presentation during Scout-Guide Week, February 20-26, 2006, to
kindly send in the paperwork for requesting Warrant of Appointments and Service
Recognition for adult members. Please make sure the leaders are fully registered
in MMS and all registration documentation has been received in the Council
Office in order for the awards to be processed.
Thank you.

Annual Camp Opemikon Work Weekend
The 6th
Annual CAMP OPEMIKON WORK WEEKEND will be held on the weekend of April 28th –
30th, 2006.
This weekend
provides a great opportunity for Voyageur Council Scouting groups to meet other
Scouting groups, to spend a fun weekend at camp and to make an important
contribution to preparing YOUR camp for another summer season. Accommodations
and meals are provided free of charge by the camp.
The format
for the weekend is as follows:
Friday April
28th – groups arrive, settle into their accommodations, then join their fellow
Scouters for mug-up at 9:30pm;
Saturday
April 29th – work day. Tasks as assigned by the organizers. The workday will end
at suppertime, after which there will be movies for viewing;
Sunday April
30th - day off. Groups may make use of the camp facilities as they see fit.
Lunch will be available at a nominal cost for those who wish to
stay.
This
event is for Rover Crews, Venturer Companies, senior (i.e. third year) Scouts
and adult leaders. Troop Scouters and Company Advisors are encouraged to take
advantage of this great opportunity for linking activities between their senior
Scouts and Venturers. Individual adult leaders are also welcome to attend.
Please note – this is a Scouting event, not a family camp, so participation is
limited to currently registered members of Scouts Canada. Registration for the
event will be limited to 150 on a “first come, first served”
