FROM THE DESK OF THE COUNCIL COMMISSIONER

On behalf of the Executive Commissioner/CEO of Scouts Canada, Rob Stewart, and the Voyageur Succession Planning committee, I am pleased to announce that Doug Hall will become the next Commissioner in Voyageur Council.  Doug will take over on July 1, 2006.  Doug has a tremendous background in Scouting, with over 25 years as a Leader, Service Scouter, Trainer, Area Commissioner and Deputy Council Commissioner.  He is a Chief Scout and Medal of Merit recipient. Please join me in congratulating Doug!

The Commissioner Quality Awards from 2003-04 and 2004-05 are now completed and I am currently getting pricing for the ribbons. I hope to have these awards sent out to the Area Commissioners before the end of 2005Thank you for your patience.  I know and appreciate how much work you do to ensure the youth have a great program and most importantly, are having fun.

Scouts Canada’s Climate Change Education Action Program has received Honourable Mention in the Imagine Canada’s Partnership awards. Education with fun…Keep up the good work everyone.

Thanks to the trainers and leaders who have made all the Basic and Advanced Program Planning and Delivery courses successfull. I also know that many groups have been working hard on their retention numbers, personally inviting youth and adults back. Thank you for your hard work. I can’t say that enough concerning the hours that we all put in as adult volunteers with meetings, planning sessions, training, outings and camps. We all work hard at making a better world and as we go forward into the holiday season we can be rewarded by the youth and the service that they do: Beavers and Cubsinging carols at retirement homes and decorating trees at hospitals; and Scouts, Venturers and Rovers putting in several hours to make the Ottawa food drive a success. I would also like to mention the groups outside the National Capital that also partner with the Civitan Clubs and local food banks. Work like this really helps the needy in our communities. These are some of the ways that we give back to the community and show our appreciation of living in Canada.

WHATS NEW

ODAWA CREATES NEW AWARD

In December of 2004, Claire Johnstone went home. Claire was an integral part of Odawa Area, willingly sharing her knowledge and expertise with whoever needed it. Claire was part of the Scouting movement for over 25 years and was one of only a handful of scouters in Odawa who had earned her campmaster certification.

In Claire's honour, Odawa created the Claire Johnstone Award. This award celebrates the Odawa Area Camp, one of Claire's passions for over 10 years and was presented for the first time at the 2005 annual Odawa Area June Camp. The award is presented to the group who has the greatest representation at the camp in comparison to their total registration.

The award consists of a carved wooden plaque which is held by the winning group and individual badges for all members of the winning group. The badge design was a group effort, with the assistance of Bryan Johnstone, Claire's husband and represents the group camping area at Voyageur Provincial Park where the camp has been held for over 20 years. The wooden plaque was carved by Orleans woodcarver, Ernie Rouleau, using the badge as the template.

This year the award went to 1st Clarence, who had representation from all three sections (beavers, cubs and scouts) and who also participated in the organizing and success of the camp.

RESERVE RECRUITMENT - OPEN LETTER TO GUY LATOUR, FIELD EXECUTIVE

Subject: Army Reserve Recruiting

Dear Mr Latour:

My army reserve unit, the 30th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery, would like an opportunity to make a recruiting presentation to your Venturer and Rover levels of Scouts. You mentioned on the phone that there is an upcoming Rover/Venturer event that you may invite us to attend. That would definitely be of interest to us.
Because many of the skills obtained as a Scout are also applicable to army reservists, we think that many of your members may be interested in our organization.  Additionally, there are many tangible benefits of being a reservist, especially for young people who are about to begin or are already enrolled in post secondary education. As well as earning pay while working as a reservist, serving members are eligible for Tuiting Reimbursement, up to 50% of tuition and manditory course costs to a maximum of $2000 per year with an individual maximum of $8000.00. Visit http://www.army.forces.gc.ca/30FIELD_ARTILLERY/benefits.htm.  Army reservists normally work one night per week and one weekend per month. Also, many reservists are tasked to take training or can be offered other full time employment during the summer months.

I have found that the leadership of the 30th Field Regiment is very connected to its members and our welfare is well looked after. I have experienced very meaningful commeraderie in the army reserves for over 13 years and that commeraderie is part of what makes me stay. I hope that your members would find similar results.

Sincerly,
Sgt Jackie MacNair

Thank you all for taking the time to correctly sort through your group registration forms and package the forms and summary lists along with the corresponding cheque to forward all to my attention. I am going through the packages one group at a time to check and enter any outstanding VRAD information into MMS. For those leaders still waiting for a Police Records Check (PRC) from the Police Services, please forward the original document to my attention as soon as possible. If you would like the original PRC returned, please attach a note indicating your request. Once copied and notarized, the original will be returned to the leader.
Keep up the great work and any late registrations can be sent in the same manner as the fall registrations: section summary list, group summary and registration cheque.
