GONE HOME - Claire Johnstone, Odawa Area

On Sunday, December 19, 2004. Claire had been a back bone to Odawa Area for many years and always had time for another project even when she not well.
______

FROM THE DESK OF THE COMMISSIONER

Happy New Year to all. I hope that this will be an exciting and profitable 2005 for you and your family. I also hope that you had a great holiday season.

I would like to take a moment of silence and remember a fellow Scouter that past away in December. Some of you may know her but I would like you to say a prayer for her family as well. We will miss Claire Johnstone and her ever smiling face. Please also remember the tsunami victims as well in that moment of silence and the Scouters that were lost.

This is the start of a busy season with winter camping, Friendfest, Scout-Guide week celebrations, and spring break. We need to remember to enjoy the ice and snow in our programs. Skating, skiing, snowshoeing and tobogganing are great things to do with your youth. Get out and take on the winter. This is a great time of year. No bug juice is required. Just apply sunscreen and layers (of clothing that is).

Rovers, Venturers and Senior Scouts - Plan for RSVP camp on the weekend of May 6-8. Contact Susie Page at susie_sunny@sympatico.ca (613-687-4870) or visit www.vrrrt.org
The DCC of Program, Bob Hickson is getting a team together to have a Beaveree in the cycle for Council Events. More details to follow.
The Opemikon work weekend has been announced as well. It will be held the weekend of April 29th. Mark your calendars!

Take care, and good Scouting.

(Pack Leaders please note: the National Capital Commission has worked to find direct links to the Cub program's Purple Star in this venue!)

Leaders are invited to a special information evening for local youth groups on Wednesday, January 19th at 7:00 PM, where you will enjoy a tour of the facility, demonstrations of their services, programs and other NCC services, plus complimentary refreshments at the end of the tour. MEMBERSHIP MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Hope you all enjoyed your holidays. I would like to remind all members that Scout-Guide Week is the week of February 20th this year. Many of you mark the date with banquets or special events in your group highlighted with presentation of awards. Please make your awards request for "Warrants of Appointments" and "In Recognition of Years to Service to Scouting" as early as possible so that I am able to have sufficient time to produce the awards in time for your events.

"'Warrants of Appointments" requirements are that the adult member has taken 'Gateway to Scouting', is fully screened, and is registered in the MMS for this Scouting year.

"In Recognition of Years to Service to Scouting" certificates and pins are awarded in five year increments beginning at five years. The criteria for this award is that the adult volunteer must be fully screened, have been registered for the period of time requesting an award for and registered in MMS for this Scouting Year. Pins for less than five years can be purchased in the Scout Shop for under $3.

To make your group awards requests please forward to me by regular mail or email a list containing the following information: the name of the group, name and phone number who the award/s is recommended by, recipient's name and what award is desired. I also request the date the award is required by and will do my best to have the award ready for pick-up in the Council office (other delivery arrangements can be made).

Please contact me with any question you may have regarding awards or the Membership Management System. Thank you.

MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH

Still ranked Number one in Canada. Great job everyone; Voyageur Council is still leading the country at 84% of last year's membership. Let's keep up the good work and strive to meet the 100% membership mark. Remember that the Scouting program of values builds youth into valued citizens who contribute to their community and we can never have enough of those.

Friendfest 2005. Need more youth? Need some more adults? Voyageur Council will again be running the Friendfest Campaign in February. There will be a reduced fee discount and a prize package for the group who recruits the most youth. Start your planning now. Information packages with lots of great ideas are available on our website. School Talks and Fun nights work great in conjunction with Friendfest so contact your local DAC of MD&G or your Field Executive soon so they can book you in.

School Talks do Work!!!
"The 137th Ottawa Scouts asked our Council Field Executive to attend St. Thomas More School to speak to the primary grades regarding the Scouting Movement.  He attended during the week of our early registration and it was a success.  Not only did we register in the Colony Section, but the Pack as well.  I truly feel they have a way of getting the word across about Scouts Canada and what it stands for and truly recommend that other groups book their Field Executive for School Talks"  - Amelia Levey, Group Chair, 137th Ottawa Scouts

To be held on the weekend of April 29th - May 1st, 2005.

This weekend provides a great opportunity for Voyageur Council Scouting groups to meet other Scouting groups, to spend a fun weekend at camp and to make an important contribution to preparing YOUR camp for another summer season. Accommodations and meals are provided free of charge by the camp.

The format for the weekend is as follows:

Friday April 29th - groups arrive, settle into their accommodations, then join their fellow Scouters for mug-up at 9:30pm.

Saturday April 30th - work day. Tasks as assigned by the organizers. The workday will end at suppertime, after which there will be a dance (with a DJ) in the Dining Hall and videos in Ye Olde Kitchen.

Sunday May 1st - day off. Groups may make use of the camp facilities as they see fit. Lunch will be available at a nominal cost for those who wish to stay.

This event is for Rover Crews, Venturer Companies, senior (i.e. third year) Scouts and adult leaders. Troop Scouters and Company Advisors are encouraged to take advantage of this great opportunity for linking activities between their senior Scouts and Venturers.
