FROM THE DESK OF THE COUNCIL COMMISSIONER

As some of you may have heard,  Guy Latour, Council Field Executive is leaving for Chinook Council in Calgary. Chinook has received a great Scouting member. We will miss the "big" Guy. (He does tower over me.) Thanks Guy for your contributions to Scouting in Voyageur Council. We will all miss you. The big question is "will the truck make it, Ha, Ha?"

I know that many groups will have a break over the Holidays and will enjoy both family and friends. All of the snow will make it great for program ideas in the new year. Find tracks in the snow while on a hike. Camp and build snow shelters. Book a cabin at one of our camps. Enjoy the warmth of a camp fire sharing songs and skits. Enjoy the outdoors. What kid, big or small, doesn't like to play?

Thanks to Odawa for hosting the Annual General Meeting. Congratulations to all recipients of the Order of the Caribou. Without all of you, Scouting would not be what it is in Voyageur Council. Thank You. Your more than an hour a week brings smiles to so many faces.

Be Prepared.

John Boyce, Council Commissioner, commissioner@voyageur.scouts.ca

WHATS NEW

CJ07 PROGRAM VOLUNTEERS

Hi fellow Scouters:

My name is John Brown and I am one of the program chairs for the land program at CJ07. My role is to find interested Scouters wanting to chair a program activity at CJ07. This person would work closely with me to develop fun and challenging programs and arrange for the needed material and recourses to run the program at the jamboree. The individual would find a co-chair to work closely with and recruit OOS Scouters from their part of Canada to help run the five day program at the jamboree. This approach will allow all the parts of Canadian scouting to have an active role in the program content at the jamboree and ensure an adequate number of OOS Scouters at the jamboree to make sure the program runs smoothly. Any short fall on OOS will come from the general OOS pool.

My program site is called BP Hill at Camp Taramcouta, Quebec, one hour north of Montreal. I am responsible for 14 program activities. These activities are for Venturers and Scouts and should be as challenging as possible. Some of the programs required at this time include:  BMX biking, bike/hike overnight, overnight hike, low ropes and bridges, geo cashing, and orienteering.  If you have other ideas for activities that involve old style scouting, these will be considered as well.  Some of the programs I have chaired at this time are: Canopy Cruise Through ThTree Tops (Sunset Area);  CSI - The Mystery OScouting (Northern lights Area); Archery (Loyalist Area); and Potato Guns And Air Rifles.

Do you know of any Scouters that want to be part of the Program team?

Come join us and make CJ07 something the youth will talk about for years.

FAREWELL

It is with mixed feelings off loss and excitement, that I am announcing my departure from Voyageur Council to move to Calgary and join the Chinook Council staff. It has been an honour and a privilege to work with such a devoted group of volunteers here in Voyageur Council. You truly do make a difference in the lives of our youth and should all be proud of the excellent work you do for Scouting. I have enjoyed my time in Ottawa and will have many memories of the volunteers, youth and staff I have come to know. You will all be missed.

Yours in Scouting,

Guy Latour, Field Executive, glatour@scouts.ca

HELPING OTHERS

During the period leading up to the Holidays we try to help others in our community.  Please remember that several agencies can use our help throughout the year.

The Ottawa Food Bank is the recipient of our help during the annual Scouts Canada Food Drive.  Did you know that in the months after the holidays the Food Bank sees a big decline in volunteers?  Why not consider helping them in the winter months by taking your Pack or Troop to sort donations? Arrangements can be made by calling the Food Bank at 745-7001.

The Shepherds of Good Hope feeds hundreds of people on a daily basis.  They accept donations of food to assist in this and other programs that they run.  Why not consider donating any food left after your camps? Our pack has done it, as has Camp Opemikon.  While their wish list includes pastas, sauces, peanut butter and soups, The Shepherds of Good Hope will accept and make use of anything including such items as open boxes of cereal and partial loaves of bread.  Donations can be dropped off at the kitchen located at the rear of the building at 233 Murray Street, corner of King Edward.  They are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Their number is 789-8210.

MEMBERSHIP MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

I am delighted to inform you that our registration numbers are doing very well. Our confirmed registered members have just passed 6400, including almost 1300 adult volunteers and over 5100 youth participants. Additional registrations have been coming in and I anticipate our Council numbers to increase as the 2005-2006 year progresses.

I would like to remind all Group Registrars to forward any missing screening documentation (interview, reference check and Police Record Check (PRC)) as soon as possible so that I can complete the confirmation of registration on any outstanding members. As you know an adult volunteer is not registered with Scouts Canada and covered by our insurance until all screening documentation, payment and signed registration form are received at the council office.  A signed registration form and payment are required for youth participants.

As 2005 comes to a close and we are busy making plans with family and friends for the holiday season, I wish you all an enjoyable holiday season and a Happy and Healthy New Year.

Lynn Levitan, Council Registrar, llevitan@scouts.ca, ext 502
