FROM THE DESK OF THE COUNCIL COMMISSIONER

Hi Fellow Scouters:
Hope that your summer has been restful and fun.
Feedback from the CCJam has been positive. Thanks for everyone’s hard work and for taking the time to take the youth to events such as CCJam.
I wish to introduce three new Area Commissioners: Andrew Paterson, Carleton; Mike McKinnonStormont-Glengarry; and Chris Richer, Upper St. Lawrence Valley. Special thanks to the Commissioners who have finished their terms: Garth Jonah (Carleton), Nithy Nitheanandan (Algonquin Hills), Jim Britton (Valley Highlands), Tom Graham (Upper St. Lawrence Valley) and David Desmarais (Stormont-Glengarry). I have enjoyed working with you and wish you continued good Scouting in Voyageur Council. Thanks to the Commissioners staying on the Management Team: John Chilvers (Nepean), Ken Roberts (Loyalist), Brent Craig (Heritage), Andy Wilson (Odawa) and Rod Wilson (Rideau). Through your direction and guidance, Scouting will continue to prosper in Voyageur Council. Special thanks to my service team Bob Hickson (Program), Tony Van Muyden (Training), Sharon Thomson (Growth), Michelle Niefer (Honours and Awards), Stuart Haslett (Treasurer), David Wray (Communications) and Darrell Bartraw (Fundraising) for their hard work and their teams working on your portfolios. To David Wray and Darrell Bartraw, good luck on your future endeavours.

MEMBERSHIP MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Hope you are all enjoying your summer. I have been extremely busy processing all the Early Registration Packages received in the office by the June 30th deadline. I am happy to report that over 100 groups in Voyageur Council took advantage of the reduced Early Registration rate. Well done!
I would like to bring to your attention at this time a few up-grades that have taken place with MMS:
1. You now have the option to register for either 2004-2005 session or 2005-2006. This function will allow you to do full registrations from now until September 2005. The 'renew' function is still available for active members-the new function is for new and previously 'inactive' members;
2. Registration Tracking function-now we can tell who exactly has registered a member; and
3. Accounts Receivable function. A much more detailed payment information screen has been added to the 'Confirm Registration' screen. All instructions are listed at this location.
As always we are working to make the registration process a smooth one. Please make sure when you send in your registration paperwork that each submission includes the following three items: one cheque ($110. per member) made out to Scouts Canada for the membership fees of all members whose registration paperwork is in the package, a summary sheet (either produced through use of the MMS, or manually) listing all the members whose registration paperwork is included in the package and signed registration forms for those members being registered (including any VRAD forms and PRC's).
All registration paperwork should be checked for completion before being sent to the Council Office.
Enjoy the rest of your summer and please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.
Thank you.
Lynn Levitan, Council Registrar, llevitan@scouts.ca, ext 502

Check out our new and improved website at http://www.voyageur.scouts.ca/growth/ for all your recruitment needs. Want to blanket the local school with pamphlets? Need a cheep yet professional looking document? Then down load the new Group Invitation flyer at http://www.voyageur.scouts.ca/growth/pamphlets_&_flyers.htm . Need some ideas on how to improve your recruitment campaign this year? Then you need to check out the ideas page at http://www.voyageur.scouts.ca/growth/growth_ideas.htm . Thinking of having a School talk? What is a School Talk you ask? Well, a School Talk is when a member from your group or your Council Field Executive goes into the class rooms in your local school and does an interactive and dynamic talk to the youth explaining all the fun and excitement they can have in Scouting. Would you like your field executive to come and do a School Talk for your group? Act quickly and give us a call soon as our schedules are filling up.

UPCOMING EVENTS

CENTRAL CANADA EXHIBITION is fast approaching, and we need your help. Scouts Canada will be doing Lost Children Services at Lansdowne Park. Any individuals or groups who are available to participate are asked to sign up so we can make this another successful year.
We will be walking around the Exhibition looking for children who have been separated from their parents and re-unite them. We require people for various shifts during each day from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.,  August 18 - 27 and from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., August 28.
This is a great community service project - what other service project allows you to be outdoors in the fresh air, and seeing the festivities (live bands, other concerts, acts, etc) while searching for separated children and parents? This activity is perfect for anyone who requires those last few community service hours for school, badge challenges, Queen or Chief Scout awards, etc.
To sign up as an individual or group, or for more information, please contact me.
Amy McRobert, 1st Regional Service Corps Lost Children, ladylavergne@gmail.com,  613 853-5910 (please leave a message).

Please read the Calendar of Events and Training Calendar e-newsletter or visit the Voyageur Council web site at http://www.voyageur.scouts.ca for upcoming events details.

OPE UPDATE

Composite Camp: Composite camp was a great success – happy campers, happy and tired staff – a great time was had by all. Thanks to all the staff and volunteers who made such a great contribution to a wonderful summer.

Fall Bookings:  Many groups have already made their bookings, so to guarantee your group the dates and facilities you want, it is suggested that you make your fall and winter bookings soon! Don’t forget the fall specials at the Paddlers’ Cove and Farrens’ Lake sites – your fee includes the campsite and the use of canoes and canoeing equipment for your group.

Venturer Cabin: This newly renovated building is the perfect spot for your Venturer Company to spend a great weekend. The cabin sleeps 14 and has a propane stove and lighting, plus a wood stove – all for just $7 per person per weekend (minimum charge of $50 applies).

We Will Feed You! Want to spend more time on your programme and less time cooking and washing dishes? Let the famous OPE Rover Crew and Venturer Company cater your group for the weekend. The food is great, the service is fantastic and the costs are very reasonable.

New Programme Activities: We now offer a tree identification hike for your group – perfect for the Naturalist badge. We also offer three orienteering courses – beginner, intermediate and advanced.
