Liliane worked tirelessly for many years as Secretary, Honours and Awards,Banquet and Special Events Coordinator with the 123rd Ottawa. A book compiling her work was given by her to the Voyageur Council for distribution to all other group committees as a valuable communication tool. In recognition of her service she received the Award of Fortitude in April 1998. She has made a difference in the lives of countless youth and adults and her spirit will go on in the leaders of tomorrow. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------- FROM THE DESK OF THE COUNCIL COMMISSIONER Happy New Year to you. There is a revised, December 2003, version of Appendix E, Tour Permit, now on the Scouts Canada web site. The changes are on the second page, regarding the need for a Permanent Resident Card. For your convenience, both French and English versions are updated on the web site, www.scouts.ca . The CN tower program for Cubs and Scouts is a go and there will be forms posted on the Scouts Canada website (www.scouts.ca) in the near future. I am pleased to announce the appointment of Brent Craig as Commissioner for Heritage Area. New forms for Honours and Awards will be posted on the Scouts Canada website on January 26th. These forms can be filled out online to make your job of recognising your volunteers a little bit easier. Give the new forms a try; your members may just have the proper criteria to receive that Honour or Award. Next month is Friendfest. Invite an adult and/or youth to experience what Scouts has to offer as the largest youth movement in the world. They may have as much fun as you are having. With that in mind, it could not be a better time since Scout-Guide week is fast approaching as well. Remember our founder, have that B.-P. spirit in your heart, not just during his birthday but all year long. Good Scouting, John Boyce, Council Commissioner, commissioner@voyageur.scouts.ca ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------- WHAT'S NEW 1. We welcome John James (Flip) as our new warden at Camp Opemikon. He can be reached at warden@opemikon.org. 2. Please note that "Friends" can attend regular meetings for two nights without having to sign the Hold Harmless Agreement, however they should register on or before their third night. "Friends" are not permitted to attend camps/outings until they have become a registered member. 3. Communications Services and the Leader Magazine are again in need of photos from the field! They are reliant upon our volunteers to provide photos of great Scouting activities. The annual photo contest is in full swing and serves as a great time for volunteers to send in photos for a chance to win great prizes (1st prize: Woods Moonglow Tent; 2nd prize: Coleman Stove and Lantern; 3rd prize: Outbound Terra 75 Backpack; 4th prizes: Timex Atlantis Watches; 5th prizes: Wenger Patriot Knives; 6th prizes: SC circa 1907 caps). The deadline for the contest has been extended to February 27th. For more information, please visit http://www.scouts.ca/media/documents/oct03p19.pdf. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------- MEMBERSHIP MANAGEMENT SYSTEM I have been receiving some common questions regarding MMS that I would like to share with you. A 'prospective' member is one whose information is incomplete. Usually the missing information relates to an adult that is missing part of the VRAD info, ie: interview, reference check and Police Records Check. A 'probationary' member is a member that has all criteria completed and is registered in MMS. Your group registrar may change the 'status' (if necessary) for these members to 'active'. When accessing the reports in MMS please make note of the following: 'registration summary' lists one file per member (the primary org unit)only. No PRC information is produced in this report. The 'membership summary' report lists each member with each of the 'org units' they may have. PRC information is included in this report. With the new year came some changes to the 'active-not renewed' membership. These members were registered in 2002-2003 but had not re-registered yet for 2003-2004. All these members have been rolled over to 'in-active'. The member information remains in MMS but simply is moved to 'in-active'. When re-registering one of these members you can simply search by the name or go into the org unit and select 'in-active' for the list. Once you locate the file in 'in-active' you can 'reactivate' them which will automatically put the information in 'prospective members' and continue on to confirm the registration as you normally would. Please note: you will be unable to complete the registration on the returning adult leader. When you reactivate the adults the interview and reference check will automatically change to 'not completed'. Please submit the registration forms to the Council office and I will complete the registration process on these leaders. What's New: Reports-Parent/Guardian//Emergency Contact List pre-formatted report. Enables you to print out a list of all members in your section/group and have the emergency information for outings. As always, if you have any questions regarding MMS please do not hesitate to contact me. This is a great opportunity to encourage adults to become leaders and bring youth into the Scouting Programs. The Council has set the fee for the month of February at $70.00. The fee is only for new registrations as a result of Friendfest. A prize package is being developed for scouting youth that have friends that register in February. Ballots must be attached to registration and be at the Council office by February 29, 2004. Winners will be announced in the March Voyageur Vision. There will also be a grand prize for the section that has the highest percentage of Friendfest registration. It will be a two-night stay at Camp Opemikon (a value of $750.00). Scoutrees is one of Scouts Canada's three accredited fundraising programs. All councils participate in Scoutrees, and all groups are encouraged to take part as well. Scoutrees is a nation-wide tree-planting project. It is first and foremost an environmental program but has, over the years, helped raise funds for Scouting. Through sponsors and donors, Scoutrees helps to fund local Scouting activities and also provides much needed income for the Canadian Scout Brotherhood Fund. You are entitled to participate in gatherings of Wood Badge holders that occur from time to time in various parts of Canada and the world. One such gathering is the Eastern Ontario Gilwell Reunion (EOGR) that takes place annually during the third weekend of September at Camp Opemikon. It is an excellent opportunity to reconnect with old friends, make new friends, and participate in activities based on a Scouting theme. It is not a training event. Its purpose is to provide a venue for those Scouters, whether active or retired, who wish to join in an atmosphere of cooperation and harmony to share ideas and experiences and to promote Gilwell spirit and fellowship. The 42nd EOGR will take place September 18-20, 2004, at Camp Opemikon. Plan to attend and pass the word to all the Gilwellians you know. While the traditional program options of the past will continue to be available the program format is being revised and expanded to provide more interesting and exciting concepts. More about this in future reports. Contacts for more information about the Gilwell Reunion are: Jeff Lambert,Chairman, 820-8522 or email scouterjeff@interactive.rogers.com or Norm Pascoe, Secretary, 745-1188, or email normpascoe@hotmail.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------- NORTHERN SCOUTING The First Cape Dorset Group in Nunavut on Baffin Island has just started their first Cub Pack and Scout Troop. Being as far north as they are resources are limited for many of the family's participating. The group would like your help and are looking for used uniforms for both the Cub and Scout sections. If you have some old uniforms in good shape lying around and would like to help the Cape Dorset Scout Group please drop them off at the Council offices for Guy Latour. Guy Latour - Council Field Executive, glatour@scouts.ca ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------- HUG A TREE Search and Rescue (SAR) Global 1, has received funding from the Trillium Foundation to do a number of "Hug a Tree" presentations in Ottawa. This is the program developed by the RCMP after the Americans had produced "Lost in the Woods". Presentations consist of a 20-minute video and then 20-30 minutes of discussion, demonstrations and whistle blowing (we'll provide the whistles). We can pitch the presentation to Beavers, Cubs or Scouts. We will not charge for the demonstrations this year but may have to do so in future years. Furthermore, we may not be able to respond to all requests (i.e., first come first served; we may not have volunteers in all areas of the region; we have limited bilingual capacity; we would need the VCR and TVs to be provided). As you make your plans for future meetings, or larger events, over the winter months please consider us. This is part of our Preventative SAR activities because the best search is one that doesn't need to happen. For more information about SAR Global 1, see our web site: www.geocities.com/sarglobal1 Please feel free to contact Ms Hana Pika, tel (613) 565-8874 or e-mail: hana_pika@msn.com to request a presentation. Also, very belated thanks to the 25th Nepean Scout Group for their extremely generous donation of a commercial grade toaster for the kitchen in 2001. Camp Crests: The recently redesigned camp crests are now available for sale at camp - only $2 each and a great souvenir of your visit. Ask the Warden or the Rover Crew for yours! (These badges may also be purchased at the Voyageur Council office) No Trace Camping: Actually we would like you to leave a trace of your visit to OPE! Beginning in January, we would ask that each group which comes to camp leave us one of their group badges (1st Greenwood, 25th Nepean, 2ieme Gatineau, etc). We will be erecting a board in the Dining Hall to display these badges so that in future years, people will be able to see the groups which have gone before them. If you pass your badge to the Warden or to one of the Rovers, we will add it to the board. It is an arm of the Scout Movement consisting mainly of Scouters and Guiders who were once active in leadership roles with youth groups. Membership in the Guild is a means to maintain contact with old friends and stay in touch with Scouting, primarily in the Voyageur Council. There is one other Guild in Voyageur Council, the 35th B-P (Limestone) Guild in Kingston. Guild members meet regularly, usually once a month, to conduct business and enjoy fellowship. Business is related to fund raising activities, involvement with provincial, national and international Guild affairs, as well as various fellowship events. We are affiliated with the Girl Guide Association's Trefoil Guild here in Ottawa and engage in joint activities from time to time. Our principal fund raising activity is the catering we provide to Scouts Canada staff and various Scouting functions. Proceeds from this operation are returned to Scouting for the purchase of youth program equipment at Camp Opemikon. The Constitution and Bylaws of the 7th Guild have been revised to bring them up to date for current operating requirements. Work on reviving the National and Voyageur Scout Museums is progressing with a lot of hard work by John Waddell and Al Griffin. The museums have long been a project of the Guild which has acted as curator of the Voyageur museum and provided guided tours for both.
