Please copy and share this e-newsletter with members in your group! The e-newsletter will update you on the latest news about Scouts Canada. It is sent to all registered members, mid-month, using e-mail addresses from the Membership Management System. ______ I N T H I S I S S U E From the Desk of the Council Commissioner What's New Membership Management System Volunteer Development and Training Membership Development and Growth Upcoming Events OPE Update Scout Shop ______ FROM THE DESK OF THE COMMISSIONER Some really neat opportunities will be happening close to home. First up is the Central Canada Jamboree in Tamaracouta in 2005. Scouting is also pleased to announce the Canadian Jamboree in 2007 to celebrate our 100-year anniversary. This will be held at Tamaracouta as well. This may be the first time that a Canadian Scout Jamboree has been held on Scouting Property. Best of all it is just north of Hawkesbury, Ontario in Quebec. These are some of the things that we can use to hype up and get the youth excited about Scouting. The new Bylaws are available on the World Wide Web at http://www.scouts.ca/inside.asp?cmPageID=544 . These are in PDF format and you can download the section/s that pertain to you or your service function. The Ottawa Renegades are having a Scouting day October 30th at 3 pm against the Hamilton Tiger Cats. Check out http://www.voyageur.scouts.ca/index2.htm for details. Also don't forget the Scout Popcorn Campaign. This is a great fundraiser with neat incentives and prizes for the youth. Don't forget the other program related items to put into your meetings like Jamboree on the Air, Remembrance Day (invite a Legion Member to your meeting to talk about why we should remember Remembrance Day and wear a poppy), for the Whitetail Beavers, the sleep over at the Museum. Check out the Events Calendar for other Council and Area Events. Don't forget about your personal development as well. Check out a training session near you! Good Scouting, John Boyce Council Commissioner, Voyageur, commissioner@voyageur.scouts.ca, ext 601 ______ WHAT'S NEW 15TH ANNUAL SCOUTS CANADA FOOD DRIVE - November 6, 2004 On Saturday, November 6, 2004 from 9:00 a.m. to approximately 5:00 p.m. we will be holding our 15th ANNUAL SCOUTS CANADA FOOD DRIVE at Loeb stores in the Ottawa area. As in the past, Loeb stores will be staffed predominately by Scouts (and in some cases, Cub Packs) to accept food donations for the Food Drive. There are approximately 21 Loeb Stores that will be the public drop-off locations and will need to be staffed. If your group would like to participate, please contact your Area Coordinator. The Lost Children Services unit of the Voyageur Council Service Corps is coordinating the sorting station. The purpose of the Drive is to help people in our communities. Did you know that more than 40 percent of the food collected goes to children? In previous years we have collected more than 100,000 pounds of food and donations for local food agencies. Please take a few minutes to reflect on how this community service project relates to the Scouting philosophy, how it can work into your weekly programming, and what impact we can make in our community. Please help Scouting make a difference in your Community. Should you require additional information about the Drive, please contact one of the following: Your Area Co-ordinator: Carleton - Doug Lyon, lyon.dj@forces.gc.ca, 591-7722 Heritage - Carol Raoult, raoult@magma.ca, 724-5944 Nepean - Bruce McCracken, brucemc@rogers.com, 225-7948 Rideau - Rod Wilson, scouter_rod@hotmail.com Odawa - Michelle Stacey, mstacey1011@roger.com, 830-6697 Sorting Station Youth Coordinator - Nee Guilmain, DeaAutumnus@hotmail.com, 270-8906 Adult Coordinator - Phil Edens, philip.edens@ottawa.ca, 580-2424, ext. 28924, 731-7149 Ottawa Food Bank, 1317B Michael St, peter@theottawafoodbank.ca, 745-7001 ---------- AUSTRALIAN YOUTH LOOKING FOR PEN PALS: Nick Hurley, 10, male, Scout, 39 Banyan Street, Narangba, Queensland 4504, Australia, e-mail: hurleyco@iprimus.com.au, Hobbies: Trains and Computer games; Taylor Argent, 11, male, Scout, 56 Osborne Drive, Burpengary, Queensland 4505, Australia, e-mail: leatay@powerup.com.au, Hobbies: Swimming and Tennis; and Reece Dawson, 12, male, Scout, 109 Trafalgar Drive, Morayfield, Queensland 4506, Australia, e-mail: dawsong@iprimus.com.au, Hobbies, Soccer and Computer games. ______ MEMBERSHIP MANAGEMENT SYSTEM Many groups have completed their registration night and are in the process of entering the registration data into MMS. We are currently at record numbers of groups that are entering their own data in MMS. Great work everyone! I would like to bring two items to your attention regarding the registration process. The first item is the fact that the Voyageur Council Office will no longer be sending out monthly invoices regarding registration, to groups. With respect to this all registration forms, when sent to the Council Office, should have a cheque attached in the amount of the number of application forms times $99. I would also like to remind groups that help is available to any group member or registrar with regards to entering and confirming registrations in MMS. Remember only 'active' members in MMS are covered by Scouts Canada insurance. I am only a phone call or email away. Please feel free to keep me busy! Lynn Levitan, Council Registrar, llevitan@scouts.ca, ext 502 ______ VOLUNTEER DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING We have a Training Team meeting for all DAC's of the Area's on October 23rd. An agenda was distributed for the "to be discussed" items, for which we value your input. Please ensure that you, or your designate attend this meeting. Thanks. The Basic "for those who Help Others" (service) did not have enough participants to make the course happen at this time. It is being delayed, and very likely to be included in the Advanced "for those who Help Others" for Scouters that need this. Note that the Basic and Advanced FTWHO are an ongoing course and seminars throughout this scouting year. Stay tuned for an update on this training shortly. The Advanced Program Planning and Delivery course for November 19/20/21 has registrations in the Pack and Troop sections at the moment. Where are the Beaver Leaders that need this advanced training ?? This is for your Woodbadge 2 recognition !! Please ensure that you register two weeks in advance at the latest, or better yet, right this week with the Eastern Ontario Administrative Centre. I hope that all of you had a great start and lots of fun in Scouting this past month. I know I did. I went to Quebec Gilwell at camp Tamaracouta....... Keep the Outdoors in Scouting and have fun in the process. Tony van Muyden, DCC Volunteer Development and Training, dcc-training@voyageur.scouts.ca ______ MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH October is “Buddy Hike” month. This is a great way to increase numbers in your sections and have a fun outing at the same time. The “buddy” would be invited to a planning meeting for the older youth or a “talk” for the younger youth about the hike a week before. All the youth, leaders, and the buddies enjoy a great hike. At the following meeting registration information is handed out to the returning buddies. Please remember the “Outdoor Activity Guide” for registered scouters and “Hold Harmless” for non-registered youth and adults taking part in the scouting event. I would like to hear about your exciting hike. Was it great and why? Where did the hike take place? Did your section find a cool new place that other groups would to explore? School talks are still ongoing, please arrange with Guy, Jeff, or myself if you would like us to come to your neighborhood school. Happy hiking, Sharon Thomson, DCC Membership Development and Growth, dcc-growth@voyageur.scouts.ca ______ UPCOMING EVENTS Please read the Calendar of Events and Training Calendar e-newsletter or visit the Voyageur Council web site at http://www.voyageur.scouts.ca for details. ______ OPE UPDATE Congratulations: To Darrell Bartraw on his appointment as Group Commissioner for the Camp Opemikon Group.
