FROM THE DESK OF THE COUNCIL COMMISSIONER

This is a great time of year to evaluate how things went this past year. Also take advantage of the early registration process and find out who will be coming back next year, and the number of leaders that you will need to start the new Scouting Year Off in September. Ask the youth now what they would like to do this fall: camps, hikes and outings. Maybe make arrangements to have a meeting over the summer to get their input or have a fun day or weekend just to relax, taking advantage of the "lazy hazy days of summer". Get some training in by taking the Family Woodbadge at Opemikon. Come out golfing to support Opemikon on June 1st.

There is also the opportunity to team up with White Pines at Madoc in late August for a weekend to show the town of Madoc what Scouting is all about. Camping, Pioneering. Details to follow.

As always there are lots of things to do in Scouting. It only takes some thought to make the dreams of our youth become reality.

MEMBERSHIP MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Early Registration Packages containing all youth and adult pre-printed registration forms have been distributed to Area Commissioners and should now be in the hands of all Group Committee Chairs. Please take the time to read the instructions and criteria carefully regarding Early Registration fee for the 2004-2005 season. Have your completed registration package in the Council office by June 30, 2004 to enable your group to benefit from the $15 savings per member on the 2004-2005 registration fee.

When entering Early Registrations for your group in the MMS make sure you complete the “maximum numbers for youth and volunteers for next session” in the Org Profile of your group. You can track your entering progress, and print off a section summary, by selecting 'transfers & other registrations' in MMS.

For members changing sections make sure you change the section BEFORE you complete the ‘next session’ registration. You may have to temporarily change your ‘maximum’ numbers to enable all the changes.

What's New. The MMS registration forms now have a bar code printed on each form for easy tracking. You can download the font that contain this bar code by simply following the directions located in What's New when you log on to MMS.

As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns regarding MMS and the registration process at: llevitan@scouts.ca

MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH

What? Another scouting year is coming to a close.  Don’t pack all your books and ideas away for the summer. A good scouter is prepared for the future, so let’s start looking at next year's registration. Why not do a late May or June school talk or at least send home some flyers about Scouting and your group with the youth? It is never too early to be looking into the future. Before you know it tomorrow is today!

For more information, questions or concerns, please contact me.

Happy Planning,

Sharon Thomson,

DCC Membership Development and Growth, dcc-growth@voyageur.scouts.ca

MUFFERAW STOMPOREE – JUNE 4-6

There are exciting times to be had at Mufferaw.  Check out the web site for program details.  The final information has been emailed and all your questions should be answered.  Learning opportunities for leaders, OOS and group helpers will also be available.  This activity will be a standing camp set-up demonstrating various cooking methods, how to rig tarps as camp shelters, useful knots and how to use them, along with a knot tying challenge.   Take advantage of the more than 50 years of camping experiences of each of the Scouters manning this activity for leaders. Learn from their mistakes and you won't have to make so many of your own.

See you at camp.

______

SUMMER CAMP – CAMP OPEMIKON

Open House:  The camp will be hosting an Open House on Sunday, June 13th from noon to 4:00 pm.  Hot dogs and beverages will be provided.  Guided tours will be conducted by some of this year’s summer staff and the waterfront will be open from 12:30 to 3:30 for those who want to enjoy a swim.

Summer Camp Opportunities: Summer camp planning is well underway.  Many of our younger programs still have camper spaces available.  Check out the website for what adventures are available for your youth and contact the office for details of openings.

Adult Scouters are needed for the Beaver, Cub Field and Brownsea programs.  Check out the job description and complete an application form, both found on the website and forward to the Camp Director.  It is a very rewarding way to spend a week of fun in the summer sun.
