I attended the White Tail Sleep Over, which was very well attended. I would like to thank Carleton Area for again hosting this wonderful event for the White Tail Beavers. This will certainly be a memorable experience for youth and adults alike. The National Annual Meeting was held at Camp Samac in White Pine Council in Oshawa. Many items were discussed and one of importance to many of us was the CJ07. The organizers are looking at an early August time frame to coordinate with the World Jamboree in England at the same time. I would like some feedback on that date. Would we rather hold ours in early July? Please email me with your preference of time (July or August). Thanks to all of those individuals who attended our Annual General Meeting. It truly was a special time. A special congratulations to those who received the Order of the Caribou, and Long Service Awards. During this holiday season it is a good time to be with family and friends. Take a few minutes and reflect on the things that you have done during the new Scouting season. You may be surprised with all you have done and accomplished with camps, outings and activities that you planned. To all those who participated in the popcorn campaign, thank you. Special thanks to Darrell Bartraw and the Area Popcorn Coordinators. This has been our best year yet for sales. Thank you for making Scout Popcorn such a success in Voyageur Council. Happy Holidays and see you in the New Year. John Boyce Council Commissioner, Voyageur, commissioner@voyageur.scouts.ca, ext 601 ______ WHAT'S NEW 1. The Ottawa 67's are offering on January 23rd a Sunday game for Ottawa scouts to pick up tickets to sell at 10.00 each, a discount of 3.00 per ticket as a fundraiser in an attempt to claim the title of "largest fundraising group in the city". There are currently almost 3000 tickets already checked out to different scout groups. For each ticket sold the seller's group gets to keep $2.00. With the number of tickets already checked out to be sold we have a good chance of getting our title. For more information contact Greg Wildey at Gregw_@hotmail.com or (613) 866-6483 or Chris Barbeau at the the 67's office 232-6767. 2. Dick Cowan has a collection of Canadian Commemorative postage stamps if anyone is interested. Call Dick at 721-7749. ______ MEMBER SERVICES AND PROGRAM DELIVERY Seasons Greetings and Happy Holidays. I would like to wish you all the best this holiday season and hope that you can spend some quality time with your families. As your Deputy Commissioner Member Services and Program Delivery, I would like to extend a heart felt thanks to all who have made the effort to make the Scouting program work for your group. 15TH ANNUAL SCOUTS CANADA FOOD DRIVE - November 6, 2004 On Saturday, November 6, 2004, we held our 15th ANNUAL SCOUTS CANADA FOOD DRIVE at Loeb stores in the Ottawa area. The final tally is.... 43,000 pounds and $8,250 (the dollars are probably slightly down as people usually give either food or money - in this case the food is so overwhelming that we'll gladly take the slight drop in money). That compares to 18,000 pounds and $8,600 dollars last year. Way to go all... thanks for a super effort. I would like to thank all the Co-ordinators, the Loeb stores and Purolator trucks for a great job. Your Area Co-ordinator: Carleton - Doug Lyon, lyon.dj@forces.gc.ca, 591-7722 Heritage - Carol Raoult, raoult@magma.ca, 724-5944 Nepean - Bruce McCracken, brucemc@rogers.com, 225-7948 Rideau - Rod Wilson, scouter_rod@hotmail.com Bob Hickson Deputy Commissioner Member Services and Program Delivery, dcc/program@voyageur.scouts.ca ______ MEMBERSHIP MANAGEMENT SYSTEM Things in the processing center are running smoothly and MMS is right on track. Take the opportunity over the next few weeks to spend some special time with loved ones and I wish you all a Happy and Safe Holiday Season. Speak to you in the New Year. Lynn Levitan, Council Registrar, llevitan@scouts.ca, ext 502 ______ MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH Maximizing your ratios! Statistics show that we have approximately 1 adult for every 3.7 youth in Voyageur Council. Naturally, this is not reflective of all groups, but it does indicate that there is a great deal of potential for Sections to take a few more youth. For example, if you have 3 Beaver Leaders and 11 Beavers, what is stopping you from taking 4 more youth? How about, 4 Pack Leaders and 15 Wolf Cubs - could you take 9 more in keeping with the section ratios? We know that there is a concern about the manageability of the sections, but perhaps there should be a greater concern about becoming too small and not being able to run a vibrant program. And consider that the Beavers and Cubs of today are the Cubs and Scouts of tomorrow. So if you are looking to maximize your ratios, please do not hesitate to contact us to conduct a school talk. Friendfest 2005 - Packages are ready and will soon be sent to your Group Commissioner, as well as being available on the Council web site. Still Number One in the country! Congratulations to you! Council Membership to date is almost 85 percent of last years numbers! We say congratulations, because historically most councils would be anywhere between 50 and 70 percent with many groups still to report. Registrations are still yet to go into the Membership Management System and with Friendfest 2005 on the horizon, we will no doubt achieve our Council goal of 8000 members. Have a safe and happy holiday season! Together, we can make the “New Year” a year to remember! If you have questions or comments, please contact me, or your Field Executives - Guy Latour glatour@scouts.ca or Jeff Benson jbenson@scouts.ca Sharon Thomson, DCC Membership Development and Growth, dcc-growth@voyageur.scouts.ca ______ HONOURS AND AWARDS The Council Honours and Awards Committee extends congratulations to the following individuals for receiving awards: Curtis Irwin, 1st North Grenville Kemptville, Bronze Cross; Paul McCabe, 14th Gloucester, Medal for Good Service; Maurice Renaud, 8th Brockville, Medal of Good Service; Carol Raoult, 63rd Ottawa, Medal of Merit; and Colleen Winters, 2nd Ingleside, Certificate of Appreciation. Michelle Niefer, Honours and Awards Chair, awards@voyageur.scouts.ca ______ FUNDRAISING Scout Popcorn - This year's Scouts Canada Voyageur Council Scout Popcorn Campaign is officially over. I would like to congratulate the fifty-seven of the Council's one hundred and sixty groups that took part. Total sales were in excess of $140,000 with profits to the groups in excess of $55,000 which is a substantial increase from last year's $82,600 in sales and $27,400 in Group profits. Plans are already underway for next fall's campaign with plans including more kick-offs in the outlying areas and perhaps delivery to these areas. With more groups participating I can see Voyageur Council easily having sales in excess of a quarter of a million dollars. Congratulations to the Highest-selling Youth, Patrick Garlick of the 1st Pakenham Scout Group who sold $1,460 worth of popcorn. For his efforts, Pat received a $60 Future Shop Gift Certificate and a World Famous Nautilus 300 three-person boat. Also, congratulations to the Highest-selling Group, the 1st Stittsville Scout Group that sold $15,934 worth of popcorn which gave the Group a profit of $6420.75. While the official campaign is over, the Council still has lots of every item in stock. Groups requiring more product can pick it up at the Eastern Ontario Administrative Centre. There is still time to get popcorn for those hard-to-buy-for people for Christmas. Keep an eye on the Voyageur Council web site for more information and statistics on Scout Popcorn and other Council fundraisers.
