FROM THE DESK OF THE COUNCIL COMMISSIONER

Seasons Greetings and Happy Holidays. I would like to wish you all the best this holiday season and hope that you can spend some quality time with your families.

New things:

As part of Scouts Canada's ongoing staff restructuring, a number of significant changes are taking place within Ontario's staffing structure. Ontario will transition to four service centers, each with a multi-council Executive Director and operations manager. Voyageur Council and White Pines Council will share Warren McMeekin as the Executive Director, and Tim Foreman as the Operations Manager. Staff will use the Voyageur Council office as the Service Center for both Councils, and the current office for White Pine will be closed. Scouts Canada is being fiscally responsible as well as utilizing our collective resources to avoid duplication. This is happening across Canada.

Toni Marcon-Stewart has left Voyageur Council and we wish her the best in her new job. I know that we are all grateful for the work that she has done with Voyageur Council and we will miss her.

Scouts Canada has stated that a youth can visit or try out scouting for a maximum 2 meetings without filling out the hold harmless agreement. This does not include camps or outings. After that time they would be required to be registered.

Marilyn Johnson is our new camp director. This is an established position on a part time basis. We welcome her experience and will assist in any way to help provide better programs and ideas for all the camps in Voyageur Council.

I also would like to thank all those individuals who attended the Annual General meeting, and who also enjoyed the Sens night at the Corel Center on Dec 6. It was great to see the number of awards that were given out at the Annual Meeting. Keep writing up those individuals so we all can recognize the contributions that they are making, for not only the youth but for Scouting as a whole.

As the New Year approaches ask the youth what they would like to do. I am sure you will hear things like tobogganing, skating, winter camping, snowshoeing and skiing. Let us all get out and enjoy the crisp clean air and make the most of our Canadian winter and heritage. Remembering there is "out" in Scouts, snow soccer or sitting around a campfire singing songs and drinking hot chocolate can also make great outdoor activities . There are so many things that we can do, we just need to make sure that they are what the youth want to do.

Again Seasons Greeting, John Boyce, Council Commissioner, commissioner@voyageur.scouts.ca

SCOUTS CANADA OFFICIAL FUNDRAISERS

Congratulations to the 63rd Ottawa and the 1st Stittsville on their success in participating in our Official National Fundraisers.

The 63rd Ottawa sold 37 cases of Hot Chocolate raising almost $800 for the group in one day. Members took turns on a Saturday in front of their local Chapters Book stores selling hot chocolate and cutting the coupons out for the customers entering the stores. Great job everyone.

The 1st Stittsville Group through lots of hard work sold $14,000 in popcorn in their community this year. Over $1550 in Scout Bucks was earned by the youth participating which they can spend at our Scout shops. Congratulations on your superb team effort and all the hard work done by the youth.

FEBRUARY FRIENDFEST (MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT & GROWTH)

February is on the horizon. ItÆs a fresh new start to a new year and with it comes Friendfest.  It's a time to recruit new leaders and youth to the Scouting movement. New recruits are like a breath of fresh air in the cold winter months. More information and assistance will be made available in the next month.

Wishing all a safe and happy holiday season,

WINTERLUDE - February 14-15 & 21-22

Attention all Scouting Members - Scouts Canada will be out at Winterlude on the weekends of February 14 - 15 and February 21-22, 2004.  We will be offering our Lost Children Service Program and we need your help. Scouts Canada has been well known for their offer of service and once again we have been asked to come back to help Winterlude out. We will be skating the canal to look for any lost children and return them to their parents. But we can't do it without all of you, our youth and volunteers that help make Scouting who we are. All we ask is for you to come out for 4 hours or for a day and offer your time with us. It is a great time to meet up with Scouting friends and go and enjoy the worlds longest outdoor skating rink. So, if you are interested please contact Eric with the Lost Children Service Corps, and he will tell you the time and place. We will be running at Saturdays 10 am - 9 pm and on Sundays 10 am - 6 pm. There will be another letter out in January but the sooner you let us know the better chance you will get the time slot that you want. So, please contact Eric Hansen at 866-1146 or e-mail at rovers_ottawa@yahoo.com.

OPE UPDATE (CAMP OPEMIKON)

Winter Camping: Make OPE your winter camping destination. Build quinzees and winter shelters, practice your winter camping skills, go orienteering, ice fish, toboggan, or use the outdoor (lake) rink for skating, pickup hockey or ringette. Snowshoes are available for rental ($1 per pair per hour) and ringette equipment, cross country skis, hockey nets and some skates are available at no charge.

Camp Crests: The recently redesigned camp crests are now available for sale at camp - only $2 each and a great souvenir of your visit.

No Trace Camping: Actually, from now on we would like you to leave a trace of your visit to OPE! Beginning in January, we would ask that each group which comes to camp leave us one of their group badges (e.g. 1st Greenwood, 25th Nepean, 2ieme Gatineau, etc). We will be erecting a board in the Dining Hall to display these badges so that in future years, people will be able to see the groups which have gone before them. If you leave your badge with the Warden or one of the Rovers, we will add it to the board.

OPE Website: For additional information on the camp, visit our website at www.voyageur.scouts.ca/opemikon/
