VOYAGEUR VISION, August 2002
IN THIS ISSUE -From the Desk of the Council Commissioner/Scouts Canada Membership Management System/Important Reminder/Upcoming Events/Program Interaction/Training/Fall Popcorn Campaign/White Tail Beaver Sleepover 2002/Scout Night with the Ottawa Senators/National Scout Shop/Voyageur Council Meetings/Canada Science & Technology Museum/Warsaw Caves.
FROM THE DESK OF THE COMMISH! - My mailbox is stuffed with Back to School flyers. Nights are cooler. Soccer games are scheduled to start earlier as dusk comes sooner now too. All signs that the lazy, hazy days of summer are nearly at an end. Time to get back to school is also time to get back to Scouting. Registration notices are appearing in community newspapers. Flyers will be at the schools soon as many local Scouting Groups announce their registration nights. Our focus at this time is normally on the recruitment of section youth and adult leaders. Lets broaden that recruitment focus just a little. As our mission is based on the development of young people, what about recruiting and developing young people as Activity Leaders and as Scouters In Training (LIT)? A bulletin from my sons school advises that this years grade 12 students are the first to require 40 hours of community service as a graduation requirement. Yet, 65% of these students have not completed this requirement! So, when sending flyers or notices to be included in the schools newsletters, remember to include your local high schools. Scouting is an ideal vehicle for these young people to complete their community service while having fun too! As we prepare for a new Scouting year, I leave you with this food for thought. This quote is from an United Church publication and is credited to Rachel Carson. A childs wonder is fresh and new and beautiful; full of wonder and excitement. If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder...he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, the excitement and mystery of the world we live in. Marilyn Johnson - Council Commissioner
SCOUTS CANADA'S NEW MEMBERSHIP MANAGEMENT SYSTEM -the Membership Management System Group Registrars Guide (Version 1.2) is now available at the newly up-dated Scouts Canada Web site. Simply log on to the site at http://www.scouts.ca then type the word 'registrar' in the search box.....continue by clicking on the word 'register' and scroll through to 'Group Registrars Guide'. Keep an eye out in the mail for your copy of the Scouts Canada Catalogue. It will contain your individual access code and password. In the meantime, I encourage you to look at the Scout Canada Web site and familiarize yourself with the new adult and youth registration forms as well as general information regarding Scouting. Perhaps print out a few blank adult and youth forms to bring to your group registration night for prospective new members. Thank you for your time and patience, Lynn Levitan, Voyageur Council Registrar, 225-2770 ext. 502 llevitan@playground.net
IMPORTANT REMINDER - Effective September 1, 2002, ALL adult members are responsible for obtaining their own Police Records Check. This is accomplished by visiting your local Police Services station. Be sure to bring two pieces of identification with your full name and date of birth. Note that the provincial health card is not accepted for this purpose. Please indicate you are volunteering for Scouts Canada. There may be a small fee. Upon completion you will receive a Canadian Police Certificate, the original of which must be viewed, copied and the copy then initialed by a Council Field Executive.
UPCOMING EVENTS - Please visit the Voyageur Council web site at http://www.voyageur.scouts.ca for details on these events and others.
PROGRAM INTERACTION - As we start a new Scouting Year, please take the time during one of your meetings to ask the returning youth what they enjoyed doing last year, highlights that made their year special. This will also help the new members to get a feel for the program. What would they change or do differently, not just in the activities but the regular meetings? What do they enjoy or have fun doing? They may enjoy reading, playing music etc...Advisors have your secretary record the important parts. Your job is to listen and write down their ideas and comments so you can plan a more interactive program. The youth then could take a part in the meeting showing the others what they enjoy doing thus they will have a leadership role as well as providing program ideas. For Colony and Pack, this could be a craft by having the youth draw what they like doing. What would they like to try or experience that is new, something that they have not done before? Starship Enterprise "Go where no man has gone before" ideas. This input from the youth can give you ideas on programing and the interests of the youth. What you may think is fun or enjoyable to them may not be. We are big kids at heart but not necessarily in mind. We are here being Scouters for the youth and stay because it is fun and that is what member services is about. The youth want to have fun as well, that is what program delivery is all about. Their ideas become reality will get them caught up in the program because it is their program. We get to think "out of the box" to make the idea come real and see the smile on the faces. Good Hunting, John Boyce, Deputy Council Commissioner of Member Services and Program Delivery, Voyageur Council.
