I firmly believe that the future reporting systems available
through this membership management system will be of a great benefit to us
all. Your Regional Registrar is working long hours to ensure the mandatory
data on the screening process is up to date for all current members. Lynn
has also been fielding questions from local registrars and Group Chairs on the
new system. She is doing a superb job in obtaining answers and in
educating your registrars in this matter. In order to move through the
learning stage we do need and want your questions. Only in obtaining
suggestions or concerns from the front line users can we then recommend upgrades
or adjustments. So please, help us all through this trial phase by
exercising a little patience. Don't be so quick to click on that "send"
button when you have scribed a note that is a gut reaction. Address your
frustrations in a positive manner with questions or suggestions for
improvements. Take it one step at a time, knowing that each step brings
you to the ultimate goal of completing this task. Remember, "we cannot do
great things, only small things with great love;" attributed to Mother
Theresa.

WHAT'S NEW
There's a new term floating around these
days, "Group Scouter". It is a new title, but not a new position.
Many of us are familiar with the title Service Scouter or Support Scouter.
The Group Scouter is an individual who is knowledgeable in the Scouting core
programs, has extensive training and has been identified as someone with
coaching, mentoring and facilitating skills. He/she is the key link
between the Section Scouters and the Area Service Team. Responsibilities
include determining training needs of Section leaders; ensuring programs are
delivered effectively; assisting in screening and orientation of leaders;
encouraging excellence in programming through promotion of awards such as
Commissioner's Quality Award; and ensuring appropriate recognition of
volunteers.
Each Group should recommend their choice of a Group Scouter to the Area Commissioner. This individual cannot be active in any other role within the Group for which they are the assigned Group Scouter. They may, be active as a Section Scouter or as a member of the Group Committee in another Group. Be careful, time commitments need to be given due consideration whenever a volunteer is taking on more than one role. Registration fees for the Group Scouter may be covered through a variety of sources, first of all by the Group in which they have a Section leader or Group Committee role, next consider payment by the Group for which they are the Group Scouter, thirdly through the Area Team budget, by the individual him/herself or a combination of any of these. The Group Scouter is your coach, your mentor, and your communication vehicle to the Area Team to express your needs, desires and concerns. Ensure it is someone with a positive attitude and an understanding of your locale.
ATTENTION YOUTH MEMBERS!!! We are looking for a cheer, 4
to 6 lines in length, that will identify us as members of Voyageur
Council. The cheer may be used at opening and closing ceremonies for
events, meetings both here within our region and at provincial or national or
international events. This contest is open to all youth members registered
in Voyageur Council for the 2002-03 Scouting year. Deadline for entry is
31 October 2002. Winner will be announced in the November Vision and the
cheer will be demonstrated at the Annual General Meeting on December 7.
2002. Winning entry will receive prizes from a selection of Scouting wear
and gadgets. Entries should include the youth's name, Group's name, Area,
and home phone number. Send entries to dcc-program@voyageur.scouts.ca.
Good luck everyone. Note: to date we have received
absolutely no response to this contest. PLEASE bring this to the attention
of your youth members, time is running out.
Marilyn Johnson, Your Council Commissioner
MEET YOUR COUNCIL TEAM - There are 187 Scouting Groups within Voyageur Council.
While each Group operates its programs independently in an Area, the Voyageur
Council manages the overall Scouting program within the Council. This is done
through a group of volunteers consisting of a Management Committee, who carry
out the day-to-day operations; a Council Commissioner's team, who service and
support the program; a number of Committees such as the Honours and Awards
Committee and the Communications Committee which provide guidance in specialty
portfolios; and a dedicated staff of Executives and support personnel who assist
the Area Service Teams
Voyageur Council, comprising some 10,900 members has a staff support of an Executive Director, three Field Executives, one of whom is part-time status, and an office staff of four (two are actually time sharing). They all work out of the Council Office with the Field Executives traveling extensively to local Areas for hands-on coaching, mentoring and support to the Area teams. We all work on the same team, Scouts Canada, with a common goal of providing the best possible program to our youth members in the safest possible environment. Contact information appears at the end of the Voyageur Vision. Please call and ask for any help or assistance that you may need.

HELP SPARK A RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS REVOLUTION IN CANADA - Four young adults
(two of whom are former Scouts) are traveling across the country in a
three-month Extreme Kindness Tour, spreading random acts of kindness in the
hopes of sparking a revolution throughout Canada. Starting on August 27,
Chris Bratseth, Brad Stokes, Val Litwin and Erik Hanson left Vancouver on
Canada's west coast and headed east with a plan of visiting every major city in
the country. They will arrive in St. John's, NF, on November 25. Their aim: to
commit as many random acts of kindness as possible, inspire others to help
people spontaneously, and connect the world through kindness. "We're
scrubbing, hugging, cleaning, smiling and motorhoming our way across the
country," said Chris Bratseth, a former Cub and Scout. (His great grandfather
actually knew Lord Baden-Powell.) "We want to inspire, motivate and stimulate
all Canadians to help others."
"We're staging extreme kindness marathons in all major cities across the country, and inviting a number of different organizations to join us," said Chris. "Random acts of kindness can be performed by anyone and at any time." Do you have kindness suggestions for them to consider? Would your Scout group like to meet the four Extreme Kindness Tour participants to conduct some joint community service project? Send the Extreme Kindness Tour an e-mail at: thecrew@extremekindness.com . The tour will be in Ottawa from October 26th to 29th.
But you don't need to meet up with this tour to conduct your own extreme kindness campaign. Take to the streets and commit a vast number of random acts of kindness. Make some of them wacky and fun. You might even invite local media to cover your kindness event, and use it as a recruiting tool. Scouts interested in photography could film the acts of kindness and post them on their web site or make a photo exhibit. We welcome the opportunity to post written accounts from groups who have taken on the Extreme Kindness challenge and will forward them to the tour participants. You can send these to communications@voyageur.scouts.ca .
People have the power to enrich others' lives and uplift their
communities through simple, spontaneous acts of kindness. Let's show Canada that
Scouting can lead the way. Celebrate your Scouting Spirit! Yours in
Scouting, David Wray, Communications & Public Relations, communications@voyageur.scouts.ca

Loeb stores in the Ottawa area. If your group would like to participate,
please contact your Area Coordinator. Venturers and Rovers from across our
Council will again be operating the Food Sorting Station located at the Food

The purpose of the Drive is to help people in our communities. Did you know that more than 40 percent of the food collected goes to children? In previous years we have collected more than 100,000 pounds of food and donations for local food agencies. Please take a few minutes to reflect on how this community service project relates to the Scouting philosophy, how it can work into your weekly programming, and what impact we can make in our community.

VOYAGEUR COUNCIL SCOUT CAMP 2003 - Brownsea Island Jamboree
Well, it's official! Plans for the 2003 Voyageur Council Scout
Camp are well underway. Here's what we know so far:
When: May 2-4, 2003
Where: Baxter
Conservation Area (Rideau River and HWY 416)
Theme:
Scout Skills Challenge @ Brownsea Island
We plan to offer a variety of competitions and activities. You will have an opportunity to pick your favorite 5 or 6 from a total of 9 or 10, first come first served. There will be an update in each future issue of the "Vision",
as well as detailed information provided to all troops in the council.
Stay tuned!! If you have any questions, please contact Doug Hall, Council
Camp Chief, at djhall@rogers.com or
(613) 836-7860.
SHARING SHARING SHARING - As most of you know that this is the Beaver Motto and
something we should practice in program. Beaver sharing sessions, Old Wolf
clubs, Scouters Clubs, Venturer Advisor Forum, the newly formed SmartGroups
Discussion Groups are just some of the ways to share good programming
ideas. Some program ideas have worked extremely well and are very
successful and others fail, face first. We need to share those successes and
failures, so we can go down the right road together. Bring a friend night, or
bring a friend outing - which works better? is there an activity that is
more suited for that event? Share that new song, skit, neat activity to
earn a new star or award. We are a brotherhood and sisterhood. Let us not have
secrets to a successful program. Share your Program successes so that others can
learn and do, to making Scouting the activity of choice!
Host a "SHARING" session in your area, meet new leaders, see
old friends and get new program ideas to share with the youth. Get involved and
share that idea with the Venture Advisors Forum, or the SmartGroups Discussion
Group at www.smartgroups.com/groups/voyageur
("section name" i.e. beavers, cubs, scouts, ventures, rovers, groups).
