IN THIS ISSUE - Honours & Awards/Scouts Canada's Mission
Explained/Popcorn/Annual General Meeting & Recognition Evening/1st Annual
Scout Winter Camp / Camp Opemikon/Employment Opportunity/JOTT/2001 Brotherhood
Camporee
OOPS - Camp Opemikon Summer brochures are out, however, the price for the 4 day
Beaver Camp was omitted - it should read $160.00 (prior to May 1st) and $185.00
(May 1st and after). Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.
FROM THE DESK OF THE COMMISH!!
It has been a month of challenges and
excitement. Our first Winterlude Camp provided me with one of those "ahh"
moments. I stood back from the campfire and simply drank in the enthusiasm
and sheer energy of the youth. "This is what we are all about!", was the
comforting thought that settled into my very soul. As we celebrate our
worldwide existence during the next week, I challenge all of our members to find
an "ahh" moment. In a time of political correctness, of immense paperwork
and an unsettling attitude, we need to refresh our very being regularly.
Take time to find the joy in a youth's laughter, in their delight and
innocence. Take time to have fun. I give you this quote from
Marianne Williamson to ponder over: "The present moment, if you think
about it, is the only time there is. No matter what time it is, it is always
now. Yet often we live somewhere else. With thoughts of the past and
present and concerns about the future, we rob ourselves of a full experience of
the present. Although the past is over and the future is never quite here,
our minds are usually so involved with one or both of them that the present
serves very little function except to form a bridge between the two."
-
Marilyn Johnson - Your Regional Commissioner
CONGRATULATIONS - Timothy Ray and Marc Jolicoeur, two highly regarded Ottawa
lawyers, have won the Gordon F. Henderson Award for their extensive community
work. Scouter Timothy Ray has been active in our Region for over 25 years,
and has volunteered on the board of the Almonte General Hospital and served on
the North Lanark Highland Games Committee. Mr. Jolicoeur, has helped the
United Way, the Civic Hospital Foundation, the University of Ottawa, La Cite
collegiale, the Community Foundations and francophone community
organizations. This community service award is in memory of the late Mr.
Henderson who was a much loved and nationally prominent lawyer.
HONOURS & AWARDS - Scouting has both a formal and informal recognition
process. The informal ways to recognize adults or special youth can be as
easy as a heartfelt 'thank you'. Also you can find plaques and
appreciation certificates in local Scout Shops that can be presented at any
event, banquet or other occasion that offers an opportunity to recognize someone
for a job well done. Scouts Canada's honours and awards provide a formal
method of recognizing the special efforts of its members and key
supporters. It is a sure way to show individuals that their contributions
were appreciated. Look in the latest edition of By-Law, Policies and
Procedures (BP & P, pages 73 to 82) for a current description of the
awards. They include:
For High Character and Courage, Gallantry or
Fortitude - Jack Cornwell Decoration (youth only)/Gold Cross/Silver
Cross/Bronze Cross/Certificate for Gallantry/Award for Fortitude
For
Meritorious Conduct - Medal for Meritorious Conduct/Certificate for
Meritorious Conduct
For Outstanding Service to Scouting - Silver
Fox/Silver Wolf/Silver Acorn/Medal of Merit/Medal for Good Service/Certificate
of Commendation
For Long, Faithful and Effective Service to Scouting
- 5 year Service Pin/Long Service Medal (10 years)/Long Service Pins (awarded
every 5 years)
Anyone can initiate an award - if you believe a person should be considered
for an outstanding service award, start the process now. Contact your
local Honours and Awards committee to see if someone has started an application
or volunteer to start the process.

Project out of restoring or maintaining a hiking trail. In their own way,
everyone will be hiking the same direction: towards a better future through
Scouting. Please register by March 15, 2001. For more information,
