IN THIS ISSUE - 1st Annual Scout Winter Camp / Winterlude Camp / OPE /
Popcorn / Win a Canoe / Generous Employers / BC Trek 2002
FROM THE DESK OF THE COMMISH!!
Joyful season's greetings to one and
all. As we take some time to relax and enjoy special moments with family
and friends, may I take this opportunity to plant a seed? Let's Bring On
The Adventure to more youth through a Winter Membership Blitz. It's the
perfect time to recruit new members as many youth have finished their fall
activities and soon will be searching the flyers and Community Calendars for a
winter activity. Take a Scouting poster, write in either a local contact
number or the regional office number and place the posters in locations where
families will be visiting over the next few weeks. Consider the windows of
local stores, bulletin boards at libraries, local arenas, places of worship,
theatres and swimming pools. The first week back at school, have flyers
sent home; or have a notice included with the first newsletter going home; or
place a poster in the school entrance. I challenge each section to bring
the adventure to at least two new youth before Scout/Guide week in
February. Are you up to the challenge?
- Marilyn Johnson - Your
Regional Commissioner
HONOURS & AWARDS - "The best thing to do behind a person's back is to
pat it." - Franklin P. Jones
You don't have to be an experienced Scouter or
a polished writer to nominate someone for a formal honour or award. If you
sincerely appreciate someone's Scouting work, you just need to be willing to
fill out an application form - do not delay - start the nomination process
today. Honours and awards committees at a number of levels, need to review
an application (district, regional, provincial). Each committee needs time
to judge the level of the award. If volunteers at the provincial level
decide the service or activity is important enough to warrant a national award
(i.e.. Silver Acorn), the application goes to the National Office, which
distributes it to the volunteers on the National Honours and Awards
Committee. Depending on the level of the award, the process can be timely
- but well worth every minute! There is a resource available entitled "A
Guide to the Honours and Awards of Scouts Canada" which is a very helpful step
by step tool. You can also contact the person responsible for
Honours and Awards in your District for assistance, or the Regional Honours and
Awards Chairman, Stan Lasenba at (613) 283-0779 lasenba@sympatico.ca or Toni at 225-2770

hand and receive community Service hours please email your Name/Group/Phone
Number/and hours available as soon as possible to Rob Petten, Voyageur Region
Scout Service Corps Coordinator nfld@magma.ca
HELPFUL EMPLOYERS - Some employers are very generous in their support of
employees contributing their time to develop our community. Nortel
Networks and Bell Canada are two corporations we know of that will donate on
their employees behalf to represent their time working in the community.
Often they will either send a donation or a matched donation. If your
employer does offer this service, should you choose to donate to Scouting, you
can direct the funding to the level you feel it will be best used; at your
Group, District, or Region.
SCOUT BOAT 2000 - Last summer Voyageur Region held a very successful Wooden
Canoe Building Activity. Scouter Dave McOnie was the sparkplug behind this
endeavor that took place in Smiths Falls in conjunction with Smiths Falls Old
Home Week celebration. To offset the cost of the first canoe, a raffle was
held (remember all those tickets you bought at the Regional Conference). A
Scout Leader from Hershey Pennsylvannia won the canoe and donated it back to the
Region provided that it would go to a deserving Youth member. To do as he
wished, the Scout Boat Committee has decided to hold a contest open to all
Scouts, Venturers, and Rovers to determine the winner of this canoe.
Contest Details are as follows:
**WIN A CANOE**WIN A CANOE**WIN A CANOE** A 14 foot Wooden Canoe Could
Be Yours!! This canoe, built by the 2nd Carlton Place Venturers as part of
the Scout Boat project last summer will be given to a deserving Scout, Venturer,
or Rover who submits the best 500-600 word essay on " WHAT SCOUTING MEANS TO
ME". Entries to be sent to Scouts Canada-Voyageur Region and clearly
marked Scout Boat Project. Winner will be announced at the Annual General
Meeting on April 28, 2001. Deadline for submissions shall be February 28,
2001. Please ensure that all youth in your section are aware of this
contest as this could also be a great way for leaders to know what our youth are
thinking.
BC TREK 2002 - August 17-25, 2002 - BC-Yukon is hosting BC Trek 2002, a
Scouts Canada endorsed first-time youth event for Venturers and Rovers. It will
be an adventure of a lifetime for registered Venturers and Rovers. As the
event is almost two years away, this also makes our senior Scouts
eligible. The theme for BC Trek is "Eight Days Exploring British
Columbia!. Following a weekend Roundtable at UBC that will be planned by
youth for youth, Trekers will head out on 3 to 5 day challenging excursions to a
variety of locations in B.C. The event will wrap up with a fun filled weekend
camp in the Lower Mainland. What a great way to meet fellow Scouting
members from around the world and "Explore Beautiful BC"! Full details are
on the web page http://www.bc.scouts.ca/bctrek.html
or http://bctrek.com
